2018 Chardonnay

2018 Chardonnay
Gran Moraine Vineyard

The 2018 Chardonnay is a Vineyard designated Dijon Clone 76 hailing from 210-acre Gran Moraine Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Gran Moraine is comprised of well-drained, ancient Willakenzie and Hazelair soils and is situated in the foothills of the Coast Range at 180-240 feet elevation 10 miles west of Carlton, Oregon.

There was a distinctive difference between the fruit growing on the hill versus the fruit at the bottom within our block at Gran Moraine.  The fruit on the hill had a speckled brown color and had higher sugars than the fruit at the bottom of the hill, which had more of a green to yellow tinge with less sugar and more acidity.  We tried a new approach to making this Chardonnay by incorporating skin contact with foot treading the grapes from the hillside, along with treating the juice in an oxidized manner.  Some people refer to this technique as “Black Chardonnay”.   For the fruit from the bottom of the hill we used our standard winemaking protocol of low oxygen.   This balanced wine was barrel fermented in a combination of neutral and new French oak barrels, Puncheons, and cigar barrels with a total of 36.2% new oak intensity. Partial malolactic fermentation contributed balanced acidity.
