2012 Gran Moraine Vineyard Magnum
In the Vineyard
Gran Moraine Vineyard is a state-of-the-art, high-density vineyard developed in 2005, planted on Willakenzie sandstone and Hazelair clay loam soils. Located just five miles due west of the small town of Carlton, Oregon, the vineyard benefits from several of the distinguishing features of the Yamhill-Carlton District: the cooling effect of ocean breezes through the Van Duzer Corridor, a relatively dry climate due to its location in the rain shadow of the Coastal Range, and the shallow and particularly well-drained Willakenzie series of ocean sediment soils.
Gran Moraine is LIVE and Salmon Safe Certified.
On October 20, we harvested our Pinot noir clone 777 fruit from blocks 3 and 4 of Gran Moraine Vineyard. Harvest chemistry was at 23.4 Brix, pH 3.56, and TA 7.2.
At the Winery
Grapes were 100-percent destemmed and cold soaked at 50°F for eight days, and then warmed to 70°F and inoculated with yeast strains UR 43 and BRL 97. The wine fermented for 18 days before being pressed off its skins and allowing to settle in tank for two more days. After settling, the wine was racked into 23 percent new French oak barrels produced by Ermitage, Cadus, and Remond.
At the Table
As always, Gran Moraine over-delivers with robust, fruity aromas pouring out of each glass. On the nose, sweet notes of strawberry and ripe plums pervade, with a slight savory note. On the palate, loads of red cherry, bramble fruit and a little fresh blueberry dominate. Notes of Baker's chocolate and smoke are present in the lengthy finish.
