Raptor Ridge sources from our estate vineyard in the Chehalem Mountain AVA, Tuscowallame, plus a rich tapestry of select Willamette Valley sites – up to 12 in a given vintage spanning multiple sub-appellations in the region. These long-term partnerships with vineyards such as Shea and Meredith Mitchell have given us more “ingredients” with which to blend and ultimately provide sensory complexity in our winemaking style.
Tuscowallame Vineyard is an 18-acre site planted to predominantly Pinot Noir plus one and a half acres of Grüner Veltliner. It is comprised of 13 separate blocks, each planted to different clones and rootstocks that address distinct soil characteristics. The word, Tuscowallame, is an indigenous word meaning “where the owls dwell.”
A refined and elegant blend, and as its name suggests, inspires quiet, contemplative time to savor and enjoy. Crafted from Pinot Noir from our estate vineyard, Olenik, Shea and Temperance Hill, this is a “designer blend” that is developed with our club members in mind.
The 2014 Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot noir is made from a field blend of certified organically farmed Pinot Noir wine grapes grown in the Eola-Amity AVA. Managed by Dai Crisp since 1999, this second-generation vineyard was first planted in 1981 by the Koo family on what is believed to be the remnants of an ancient volcano. The vineyard is primarily made up of Pinot Noir, with a few acres of Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris. With an elevation range of 660 to 860 feet, Temperance Hill is a cool site, providing excellent growing conditions for Pinot Noir. The soils are predominantly Nekia, Rittner and Jory, with grapes planted on many different slopes with varying exposures.
Raptor Ridge Estate’s Tuscowallame Vineyard is located in Oregon’s Chehalem Mountains about 25 miles southwest of Portland. 20% whole grape cluster inclusion adds complex tannins, as well as intriguing spice on the nose and palate.
Our second vintage working with this fascinating, high-elevation Eola-Amity Hills AVA vineyard. Savory notes of pine resin, mushroom, black pepper and olive mingle with blackberry and cassis.
